Owl Obsession Pattern Review

I’m so excited to finally be able to post photos of this:

4 An Owl Obsession Blankie! <– Rav Link

I’ve seen this pattern made a bunch of times, and just had to try it for myself! It’s Owl Obsession by Marken of the Hat & I

Things I like about this pattern:

-Extremely well written instructions, and extensive photo tutorials for every aspect of the pattern- there is no way you could have any questions about the designer’s instructions after such thorough explanations!

-Interest/Uniqueness factor: the elements in this blanket change often enough to keep you interested. It’s definitely not the same as making a million little granny squares, then having to sew them all together. You can tell from looking at a picture of the pattern, it calls for 9 owls, 4 large circles, 12 small circles, and 8 half hexagons, plus the eyes and beaks, which brings me to my next section:

What I don’t like about this pattern:

-SO. MANY. PIECES! There’s absolutely no way you could make this blanket with any fewer pieces than there are- it’s just a side effect of making a blanket out of a bunch of motifs with eyes, beaks, and buttons on it, but believe me, when people complain on Rav about there being a million and one ends, they’re not kidding! Think of it this way- 2 ends per eye (36) 2 ends per beak (18) the half hexagon has an amazing 8 ends each (64)! So, counting only the eyes, beaks, and half hexi’s, you have 118 ends to weave in. That is a LOT! Plus sewing on eyes, sewing the pieces together, you get the picture.

Overall rating: 9/10

Will I make it again: Absolutely!

Changes I’d make: I think I would use a join as you go method for the motifs, so I won’t get stuck with a bunch of sewing up at the end, and also I’d weave in the ends for every motif as I complete it- it’s the only way to keep your sanity! I’d probably also like to try making an adult version- larger than the 34″ square baby size. We’ll see!

Would you or have you tried this blanket? What was your experience with it?
